The Card Game

client:
Creation Financial Services

project:
The Card Game

the brief:
Beyond the Conference and Creation Financial Services commissioned iceni to produce five roleplay scenarios to show examples of good and bad selling techniques to retail staff as part of a training workshop.

To make the drama look realistic and unscripted, Beyond the Conference wanted the scenarios to appear as if they were part of a fly-on-the-wall documentary, directed, filmed and edited as if the camera is capturing reality.

creative strategy:
This was a tricky brief, as it required the scenes to look absolutely natural, but at the same time deliver specific training points. To avoid writing unnatural dialogue, we introduced an 'expert' to observe the staff in their daily routine. Similar to when a psychologist comments on behaviour in the Big Brother house, each scenario consisted of a roleplay, followed by comments from our expert who pointed out mistakes and successes and possible areas for improvement.

Once our script had been approved, we started the search for our actors. To ensure that we had the right performers, we held a casting session and auditioned for the roles of both store personnel and customers.

Each actor was asked to read part of the script and then perform an improvisation in-character - which proved to be very entertaining! At the end of a long day, we were confident that we had the right team in place to produce the realistic scenes that our clients were envisaging, and to deliver this training word perfectly.

Filming mainly in Adams, JJB Sports, and USC stores, the shoot was frenetic, but immense fun. To be true to the fly-on-the-wall documentary style, we needed to shoot most scenes in one take. So, the director carefully rehearsed each scene, and walked it through with the camera several times before it was done 'live'. To add to the realism, we also scripted some 'accidental' shots of the crew in the background, and made sure that the customers (actors) looked surprised when they saw the cameras.

result:
Post production for the project was a simple process of marrying up broadcast graphics and the live footage from the shoot. The final video roleplays were delivered in bite sized sections for the client's training days. The new training programme was launched at a conference event and received an excellent reception.

The training programme is used in all stores that offer the DUET Card to their customers.
