Explorations Teachers' Edition DVD
the brief:
Musical improvisation is now part of the national curriculum, but many music teachers, having never been taught to improvise themselves, find it a difficult subject to teach. So, Team World Music have launched 'Explorations' - an exciting new series of Music books designed to teach children how to improvise on their chosen musical instrument.
iceni were commissioned to produce the Explorations Teachers' Edition DVD to show real lessons in practice. This was going to be a rare opportunity for these professionals to see another teacher deliver a music lesson and gain valuable tips.
creative strategy:
With the concept of presenting an 'honest' lesson, iceni provided film crew and an outside broadcast audio suite to capture the action. The sessions were recorded live and edited to produce complete lessons, in logical 'chapters', demonstrating techniques for delivering improvisation to instrumentalists of all abilities and ages.
The shoot took place over two days in two locations. Day one was a group of thirty performers, aged between seven and nine. Before filming even began, a coach was delayed and there had been two nose bleeds (the performers not the director!), but as the orchestra settled in its seats and the cameras rolled we captured some excellent performances.
Day two at UCE Birmingham featured smaller groups and some more accomplished performers. The raw footage was edited using multi-camera software and individual lesson programmes were created for the resource DVD. iceni designed and authored the DVD, which features almost two hours of 'live' video footage. Each section of the video is designed to give valuable teaching tips to be used in conjunction with the lesson plans within the Exploration Teachers' edition.
