the brief:
Inclusive education means that all students in a school, regardless of their strengths or weaknesses in any area, become part of the school community. Teachers are increasingly likely to have a child with a disability in their class and if they have no prior training or knowledge of the condition it could be quite daunting.

To help teachers avoid this situation, the Action for Inclusion Team commissioned iceni to produce a DVD video resource for teachers to help them support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The objective of the programme was to allay any concerns that teachers may have when a child with ASD joins a class, and to give an accurate and concise overview of this complex condition. We had to demonstrate workable, simple strategies that teachers can use on a day to day basis to enable a child with ASD to settle in the classroom and achieve their potential.

creative strategy:
The video follows Adam and Ben, two boys with ASD throughout a normal school day, as teachers and support workers explain how they help the boys to access the curriculum. The budget allowed us to spend one day with each case study.

Any change or disruption to the routine of a child with ASD could cause them severe distress. iceni chose to shoot on small mini-DV cameras and the crew maintained their distance to keep disruption to a minimum.

Using smaller, cheaper cameras for a project like this caused some challenges in post production. However, the look of DV and the access the cameras allowed the crew, helped to create an honest, detailed and accessible programme.

A child's inclusion in school is greatly enhanced if the teacher has a basic understanding of how the child experiences the world around them. Although every child is different, the programme gives an overview of the various characteristics of the disorder, illustrated with examples of Adam and Ben's behaviour captured on camera.

The overall message is that social inclusion has positive effects for all members of the school community. The DVD demonstrates that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder can achieve in mainstream schools - Adam and Ben are clearly two happy boys who are achieving beyond the original expectations of their teachers and parents.

the result:
The programme was launched on 14th January to an audience of teachers and representatives from the National Autistic Society at a teacher-training day. Initial feedback was extremely positive.

Since the launch, the DVD resource has been available to buy from the Birmingham Action for Inclusion support team and the responses from teachers and EPs who have used it have all been very enthusiastic. The resource also includes printable DVD-Rom documents to further support teachers with clear instructions on the DVD of how to access them.

The resource has now been purchased by the National Autistic Society.
