Hearing Impairment in Mainstream Schools

client:
Action For Inclusion Team

project:
Including Children with Hearing Impairment in Mainstream Schools

the brief:
80% of children with a hearing impairment go to mainstream schools, and so most teachers will have a child with this condition in their class at some point in their career. To help teachers, Birmingham Action for Inclusion approached iceni to create a training DVD explaining key strategies they can use to fully include these children in their lessons and help them to learn.

creative strategy:
iceni provided scripting, organisation, location filming, graphics and editing for the project. The shoot consisted of two days in local schools, following children with hearing impairments throughout their normal school day and filming the use of equipment and procedures designed to assist their learning.

We interviewed class teachers, teaching assistants and teachers of the deaf as well as the hearing impaired children themselves, who all gave their viewpoints of the challenges and strategies for inclusion.

solution:
The resulting video was encoded for DVD with the option of BSL and subtitles for the hard of hearing. This subtitle option was set as the default selection when accessing the DVD.
