First Transpennine Express Documentary Film

client:
TransPennine Express, First Group, Siemens, Keolis, HSBC Rail (UK) ltd
project:
The Promise, a documentary film following the design, construction and entry into passenger service of the Pennine Class 185 locomotive

the story:
Simon Calder, Travel Editor for The Independent and regular contributor to the BBC's Holiday programme, goes behind the scenes of a multi-million pound engineering project.

Filmed over 2 years, this is the story of a promise TransPennine Express made to revitalise rail travel across the North of England.

Not since the genre-defining British Transport Films has a documentary production team been allowed this level of access to the designers, engineers and visionaries involved in delivering new trains. The Promise features rare interview footage of rail industry professionals from First Group, TransPennine Express, Siemens, and Network Rail, addressing the challenge of designing, testing and delivering 51 Diesel Multiple Units into passenger service.

The film follows the project from the creation of the TransPennine Express franchise in 2004, through the installation of a life-size model of the new train at the National Railway Museum in York, the construction and rigorous testing of the Pennine Class 185 at a purpose-built facility in Germany, and culminating in the first train entering passenger service at 06:22 on the 14 March 2006.

The special edition DVD contains the full 30 minute film The Promise, a Video News Release of the 185's first UK journey, and iceni's US and UK award-winning short film Are You Ready? released exclusively to the staff and stakeholders of TransPennine Express in 2005 to celebrate the launch of the new train.
