Education is Not Just for Youngsters

client:
Walsall College of Arts and Technology

project:
Lifelong Learning

the brief:
Education is not just for youngsters! This is the message that Walsall College wanted to get across when they commissioned iceni to make a promotional video for them.

creative strategy:
We decided to make a case study led documentary featuring successful mature students who could talk about their own experiences of higher education and allay any fears that other people may have. This reality format is a simple but highly effective way of communicating a message to viewers.

The programme starts with voxpops (short interviews) with people in the town centre explaining why they would not consider going back into education. Answers included:

"Too old now for college!",
"I'm too old for that, I'm retired",
"Going back to college at the age of 25 is a little bit frightening",
"At my age, 'cause I'm 42, I think its threatening at my age, there's lots of young ones there..."

This technique of voicing the viewers' reservations shows that they are not alone and that the college understands their fears.

The video covers the wide variety of subjects offered by the college and the ongoing support that is available to all students from application to qualification and further study at Wolverhampton University.

The footage portrays the pleasant learning environment at both Walsall College and the University of Wolverhampton and quashes any preconceptions that the viewer may have about further education being 'stuffy'.

the result:
Walsall College were so pleased with the resulting video, they kindly wrote this testimonial for us:

'iceni were commissioned by Walsall College of Arts & Technology, as part of an Aimhigher Community project, to produce a short video of case studies of mature students who had returned to learning at College and University. The video was to emphasise the concerns mature students initially have about returning to learning and how these concerns were successfully overcome by these three students.

Throughout the process of engaging students to participate in the video, organising the shooting schedule, ensuring all relevant parties were at ease about the practicalities and the disruption of filming the video, the members of iceni were helpful, friendly, unobtrusive and extremely professional.

During the interviews with the case study students the staff from Iceni proved very skilful at eliciting the feelings and thoughts of the students in a very positive manner. The completed video captured the thoughts, feelings and hurdles mature students often experience when returning to learning brilliantly, and is a very uplifting message to all adults thinking of returning to learning.

The video has been shown to college staff and community students and received some very good comments:

'Inspirational'

'It makes you realise you are not the only person who feels that way about returning to College'.

The College will be using the video during this year's Adult Learners' Week, a national event which celebrates the success of adult learners.'

What more can we say!
