DVD Doctor

client:
Birmingham City Council

project:
Dialogue on Diversity

the brief:
Experiencing compatibility problems with a DVD produced for a high profile research project, Birmingham City Council needed a new disc designed, remastered and replicated in a hurry.

solution:
The programme was re-encoded to DVD Forum guidelines, using an industry standard hardware encoder, for the very best quality DVD video. The finished project was mastered to professional DLT (Digital Linear Tape) and pressed onto DVD5 discs.

DVD discs can be supplied in 2 main formats. A 'burnt' DVD (there are three formats with various pros and cons: DVD-R, DVD+R and Authoring DVDs) or a factory pressed DVD.

A burnt disc cannot be copy protected. Because the discs can vary in grade and quality, failure rates can be high. Unless using Authoring DVDs (produced with pioneer authoring burners) there may be compatibility issues.

A factory-pressed DVD is exactly the same as the Hollywood discs you would buy from a shop. Using professional DVD authoring software, the resulting discs will be compatible with the widest possible range of PCs, MACs and set top DVD players. The professional production of DVD allows copy protection software to be installed on the disc - preventing unauthorised duplication of your project. iceni has negotiated a macrovision license to provide the most cost effective way of including this technology on our products.

The original faulty DVD had been produced with sticky labels on them. This is potentially disastrous for a viewers DVD player as the extra weight of the label may cause the disc to shatter when played. Our design team quickly prepared print and films for the discs to create a premium quality Hollywood DVD.

results:
iceni encoded, tweaked the menu design, mastered, printed and packaged the discs and delivered in the tightest of tight timeframes.

The client said:
"iceni's service was vital to the final production of our DVD. Technical issues with another supplier had left us with an unusable product and a phone call to iceni immediately reassured me that I was dealing with professionals. True to their word and with a complete appreciation of our needs they delivered the project on time and to cost. What I really appreciated as a client was that iceni went above and beyond the original specification in suggesting improvements that made the most of the DVD format. I would not hesitate in using them again."
