Careers in Public Service

client:
Learning and Skills Council / Public Service Compact

project:
Careers in Public Service Campaign

the brief:
Following the acclaimed ‘perceptions of public service’ research project, DVD report and microsite, iceni were asked to deliver a further major research project for the Public Service Compact team, at the Learning and Skills Council.

‘Perceptions’ delivered candid interviews with young people expressing the negative opinions they had formed about work in the public sector. The Careers in Public Service project was conceived to address the issue of negative perception.

The ‘Careers’ campaign brief was to produce a promotional DVD featuring public sector employees at different times in their careers.

creative strategy:
Before we could begin filming, we needed to find out what people working in the public sector really felt about their jobs. We created an anonymous online questionnaire and over a thousand public sector employees received an email inviting them to comment on their job, their prospects and anything else they wanted to get off their chests about Public Service.

The questionnaire also gave people the chance to appear in the video to talk about their career.

The online component of the campaign was designed by the interactive media team at iceni so that authenticated users could read the comments posted on the microsite as they came in, and see graphic charts of interpreted results from the research submitted.

We then filmed a series of informal chats about the opportunities and diverse careers in public service.

But the project didn’t stop there. We know that delivering the finished video is only a part of the process, and getting people to watch it can be a challenge. So, even before the research started, we began the design of a DVD ‘pack’ with materials to advertise the project wherever the DVD is available.

result:
iceni delivered all of this research, filming, website and packaging design within the original budget, without compromising on quality at any point.

The final DVD was delivered with a ‘point of sale’ pack, in keeping with the project branding. The pack featured the DVD, more information about all the organisations that can help people find the right career in Public Service, and a big, fold out advertisement.

You can see the results of the research by visiting www.careersinpublicservice.co.uk. Copies of the DVD can be ordered from Karina Janas at the Public Service Compact on 0121 345 4529. They are also available in libraries, Jobcentre Plus, Colleges, Universities, Youth Centres, and Connexions across the region
