Birmingham City Council's Energy Smart

client:
Birmingham City Council

project:
Energy Smart, Corporate Social Responsibility project promoting energy saving policy at the UK and Europe's largest local authority.

the brief:
To deliver a short, engaging launch film for Birmingham City Council's Energy Smart campaign.

The campaign aims to remind staff that the simple things we can do to save energy and resources, all add up to make a big difference.

creative strategy:
With the communications team at Birmingham City Council, iceni developed the idea of a short drama, scripted and filmed in the style of britflick Sliding Doors.

Helen, played by Julie Westwood, works for Birmingham City Council. As she climbs out of bed on a cold October morning, a seemingly unimportant event throws her day in two different directions. Helen is about to live the same day twice... at the same time.

Energy Smart Helen saves her resources switching off TVs and monitors and doesn't waste water. The other Helen wastes energy and this makes her day go from bad to worse as she gets covered in coffee, loses her work and gets a parking ticket. There's two sides to every story, and the viewer gets to see both of them.

Of course we know that making energy saving choices won't make that big a difference to everyone's day, but with over fifty thousand employees at Birmingham City Council making the right choice, it will make a big difference to the future.

Creative colour grading and a specially selected soundtrack add dramatic effect to the programme.

result:
We delivered DVD copies of the programme for delegates to take away after the launch event. It will also be used in the council's corporate induction sessions to raise awareness of energy issues in the workplace.

Communications Officer for the Development Management Service said,

'We premiered the DVD to 175 of the council's top officers and it had a great reception. The comments were really positive, with many people saying that it was a refreshing change from the usual run of the mill corporate video.'

'People also commented that the tone was just right - it got the messages across without preaching.'

'iceni were fantastic - it was the first DVD I'd commissioned and their expertise to guide us through the process was invaluable. The team were approachable, had some great ideas and worked really hard to deliver to our tight deadlines.'

'The DVD has elevated Energy Smart from a one-dimensional project relying on printed material, to an interesting and topical campaign that staff are genuinely interested in and engaging with.'
